In 1985, the Moskowitz campus was bought from a wealthy Arab family by the benefactor Irving Moskowitz. This family was not the first owner of this extensive piece of land- the father of the family purchased it from the heirs of Hilda Andersson, a Christian reporter from Sweden who built the house at the beginning of the 20th century and lived in it until she was murdered in 1948.
Five years later, Rabbi Hanan Porat and Rabbi Benny Elon z”l initiated the establishing of the Yeshiva in memory of Giora Ashkenazi, a commander in the paratrooper (Tzanchanim) brigade and the commander of Rabbi Hanan Porat, who had been killed instantly in battle during the six day war, and named it ‘Beit Orot’. The students at the Yeshiva began their studies in 1990. Rabbi Benny served as the head of the yeshiva until his election as a member of Knesset in 1996, and later on was succeeded by Rabbi Elchanan Ben Nun and Rabbi Danny Izak YBL”A.
Over the years, hundreds of students have studied at the Yeshiva and then enlisted in the “Hesder” program, and are today integrated into all parts of Israeli society.
In 2022 The Yeshiva opened a Yerushalmi Beit Midrash for army graduates headed by Rabbi Chen Hallamish, intended for Yeshiva students who wish to invest some more time in their Torah studies, after they have finished the army and before they continue their lives raising families and pursuing their careers.
